US8C
UNITED STATES PLAYING CARD COMPANY
RUSSELL and MORGAN FACTORIES
1906 – 1925
The most common of the older Bicycle decks. Early versions were produced in both Ivory (smooth) and Air Cushion (linen or textured) finish. Later US8c decks were only available in the Air Cushion finish.
These were the last years of the green and brown color options. When sampling the cards that turn up from the early years of Bicycle card production (decks and singles), the green and brown varieties are consistently hard to find, which must be attributable to lower production runs. This in turn was likely the result of consumers who were early adopters of red and blue as a pleasing standard for playing card design.
On top of all the other variations, some early US8c decks (probably only 1905-1906) were also issued with smaller indices on the face cards. A comparison of the two different styles can be seen in the first image below (thanks to Steve Bowling). Following are examples of US8c aces of spades, jokers and a sampling of different box designs and colors.
