Introduced in 1906. Discontinued in 1939. A very long run for what must have seemed like a dated design by 1939. Old fashioned in concept, but certainly more graphically modern than its predecessor, Lantern No. 1.
Very nice examples of this deck in their original boxes are in circulation, although I have never seen Lantern No. 2 with a US8e ace of spades.
SALES DATA
A VG red US8c Lantern No. 2 deck (OB2/no joker) sold on eBay for $114 on 2/21/20.
A VG blue US8c Lantern No. 2 deck with worn GE and joker in “No. 52 Gold Edges” box (OB3) sold on eBay for $90 on 7/24/21. I would possibly consider this an original pairing of deck and box if the box had a paste-down of the card back. But, the reverse side of the box was never shown in the numerous photos in the listing, so I suspect there may have been a card from a different deck on the box. I have never seen a Bicycle deck issued in such a generic “No. 52” box, although other USPCC brands were. In any event, a Lantern No. 2 deck with gold edges is a rare find.
A VG- blue US8c Lantern No. 2 deck (OB3/no joker) sold on eBay for $99 on 1/25/24. The box had considerable foxing and typical tears on either side of the flap. The deck appeared to have soiled edges.
