Introduced in 1908. Discontinued in 1910. This is a very rare deck, and one of three two-tone designs that appear to have been released solely in the United Kingdom. The other two designs are Chain and Saddle.
While collectors have long believed that the two-tone Bicycle cards were only available in the U.K., recent sales suggest that they may also have been released in France. The deck described in “Sales Data,” below, was apparently found in Reims, France. I have purchased a Saddle deck and a Handlebar deck from a dealer in France, both in U.S. style tuck cases. In my experience, the U.K. Bicycle two-tone decks always come in cardboard sleeve boxes.
Pictured below is an example of a Handlebar deck that was issued in the United Kingdom. Note that this particular deck has gold edges, making it an especially rare deck of cards.
SALES DATA
A well used deck of blue & brown Handlebar playing cards (no joker/no box) sold on eBay for $100 on 12/25/19. Every card was marked on the face with a number, perhaps for a particular card game. A mint Handlebar deck, with the joker and original box, might go for five times that amount, or more.
